Problem

Stylised games in Unity want cel shading, ink outlines and painted looks. Unity has three render pipelines, Built-In, URP and HDRP, each with its own post-processing path, so an effect written for one does not run on the others, and artists end up waiting for a shader programmer.

Constraints

  • Built-In, URP and HDRP, from Unity 2021.3 to Unity 6.4, with native URP 17 RenderGraph on Unity 6.3 and later.
  • No shader code for the artist: sliders, toggles and colour pickers in the Inspector.
  • Stylised looks must hold still from frame to frame.
  • Three editions from one code base: Essentials, Pro and Ultimate.

What I built

CelShaderFX is post-processing for the whole frame, in 11 effect modules: cel shading with 2 to 16 colour bands, outlines in five methods (Sobel, Roberts, Canny, DoG and JFA cinematic outlines up to 64 px), Kuwahara, hatching, dithering, halftone, watercolor, painterly, ASCII art, pixelate and colour correction. Shader-include guards keep one source for all three pipelines, and motion-vector reprojection keeps the looks from flickering.

A Setup Wizard configures the pipeline, and 37 presets with thumbnails, picked from a Preset Browser, give a finished look in one click. A GPU Cost Meter shows what each module costs.

Pro adds cel shading per object: rim, MatCap and PBR specular, a face SDF shadow, hair shading, multiple lights, subsurface scattering and baked GI. Ultimate adds a runtime scripting API that fades modules, crossfades presets and blends looks by trigger volume or distance.

Result

Version 1.0.0 shipped on 21 February 2026. Version 2.1 added 37 presets with thumbnails, Unity 6.4 support and the runtime scripting API. It is on the Unity Asset Store in three editions: Essentials, Pro and Ultimate.
